It's nearly xmas and bitter cold outside, my headgehogg is still comming up to feed, at different times at night, he loves his/ her chicken and dog meat meals, i will never let it down, i feed it befor i feed myself., only water that has been out for a few day will they drink, not straight from the tap, beware of garden pools, they can swim but tire easly then drowned, so make sure there is an easy way out for them..billy j.

What are baby hedgehogs called?

Reply: There's no specific word defined in the dictionary, however they're commonly called "hoglets"

I wish some enterprising businessman would set up a Rent-a-Hedgie service for green gardeners, so there could be an organic way to control slugs! We once had to rescue a baby hedgehog that had got trapped at the front of our house, but I've never seen one in the back garden (where it could do me some good).

I found all information interesting. I have a hedgehog in my garden and would like to know what can I feed him for him to come back every night, I pick him up most nights and he likes it because he comes back. He doesnt curl up when I pick him up, does that mean he likes me?

Reply: It's an instinctive reaction to curl up when scared so it implies he feels safe when you pick him up. I've seen it before that they curl up when you first handle them then realise you're not hurting them. As far as food goes, either collect some insects from the garden, feed it chunks of cooked meat or put some dog/cat food out (not fish flavour though).

I would like to raise a hedgehog. What do I need to get started? How do I find the things I need? Thank you for your help!

Reply: If you're looking at keeping one as a pet (which you should know I strongly disapprove of) I'd recommend a look at www.hedgehogcentral.com

A few years ago I 'over-wintered' a pair of abandoned hedgehogs in my cold greenhouse. One escaped when someone left the door oopen, but the other one lived through the winter. Accidentally, the night I left the door open for 'her' (Myfanwy) to go free, it poured with rain. But 'she' came back the next night, and stayed the once, and then left for good. I never had a positive ID of Myfanwy afterwards, but I certainly have a pair of hedgehogs regularly 'grazing' the lawn at night. I do hope that they are related to my dear Myfanwy.

I found this site on google, and I absolutely love it, almost as much as I love hedgehogs. I grew up with them in my mother's garden and loved them ever since. It is sad not to see them any more in the wild here in America.

Glad I have checked out the websites I have so far. We have 3 babies in our garden,(first night there were 2) had no idea what to feed them. Ignorantly gave them bread and milk, now see this is wrong. Tonight they will get apple and water, see if they like it. Just hope that 2 nights of bread and milk will not do them too much harm

Reply: They should survive those 2 nights! Not sure how they'll take to the apples though as I think they'd prefer meat. Would be interesting to know though.

Hedgehogs have been living in my garden for years. We are a team in trying to eradicate the slug and snail population! They usually hibernate underneath the garden shed, but one of them chose a corner of the greenhouse this year. I discovered it while dismantling the greenhouse to put up a new one - all work halted until I get some advice!

Lovely site packed with info - sadly couldnt find any details on what I was looking for - a friend asked me how to identify hedgehog droppings as she thought she had some in her polytunnel but was not sure. I have searched numerous hedgehog web sites and can find no mention of this. Any info appreciated please.

Reply: Can't think of any websites I'm afraid but I would recommend "The Natural Hedgehog" by Lenni Sykes with Jane Durrant.

They love slugs. They eat snails. They are always protected. They go hibernating. A girl in our school saw a hedgehog. Hedgehogs love milk, and sometimes they can drink milk from cows udders. Tara's nana had a hedgehog in her garden. They could even eat catfood!

love the website.have recently found a hedgehog in the garden and have been busy taking photo of her,we even named her, henrietta(original)sitting in the concervatory each evening just to watch her wandering around, facinating.when on hedgehog watch last night found a baby also wandering around looking for food.so now the bowl of water is out along with a dish of cat food.(now named netta).interesting to see how you encourage them to stay.apart from having less slugs and snails in the garden i am finding the little cuties great to watch.

Hi I live in the middle of portsmouth u.k in a block of maisonettes and i have much wildlife visits to my garden including a fox squirells and hedgehogs....tonight my dog would not settle and kept running to one of the garden chairs sitting there was a hedgehog i was amazed whe she went nose to nose with the dog ....i had to laugh as my cat who kills anything that moves gave the dog a look of disgust and went indoors without even attempting to attack the hog....when i went near she curled up so i retreated but she continued to sniff the dog ...have you any ideas why she wasnt afraid of the dog please?? regards Elaine

Reply: Hedgehogs usually take the attitude that their spines will protect them from anything however I would still have expected it to curl up when your dog approached. All I can guess is it's a hedgehog that's always lived around houses and has got used to cats and dogs and doesn't see them as a threat

Very useful site with all the basics. Am looking after a totally blind hedgehog who met with a nasty accident and was passed to me to keep her in my escape proof garden after she was repaired. The joy is that she does not know night from day so is always up and about in the daytime especially if we are in the garden too. She is a delight. But she waits by her feeding station for a meal on a plate instead of sorting out a natural diet.

Hedgehogs are cool. FREAKIN' COOL! Their mating rituals are far-fetched, and... freaky naughty. Anyhoo - I would love to copulate with a sexy hedgehog like yourself. Thank you for your time, Yours sincerely, Laura and Bethany. P.S. Obviously not at the same time, that would be just uncouth. Cheerio old chap!
