Hi I'm wondering if you could help. We have a relatively small garden that we think is now trapping in a hedgehog and its two babies (that we have seen - there may be more!) since we had a house extension. Can you please tell us how much space the hedgehogs will need, and if we may get too many for the space we have? Thank you.

Reply: Hi Alice, Hedgehogs usually cover areas of several square miles and will return to the same nest for the summer/autumn season. Therefore it's very likely that they are finding a way out of your garden - either over or under walls. If they are indeed trapped then they definitely don't have enough space, however I would be very surprised if that was the case.

Hi its me again disaster has struck! My mom with 6 babies appro5-6 wks old have been doing great.Been down this evening and 2 babies are lying there dead unmarked to what i could see, 3 babies fine 1 baby and mom missing..I am in shock cant work out whats happened nothin has been in there as far as i can tell.I decided to bring the 3 babies in for safety.I have supplied lots of leaves placed a bowl of cat food in and abowl of goats milk.I have no clue as to what to do next any help would be very appreciated.

Reply: My guess would be that the mother has unfortunately been killed while out foraging for food, and so the babies have gone hungry. They themselves are probably still too young to leave the nest so would likely starve if not cared for. You have done well bringing the babies in and feeding them as I doubt they would have a chance of surviving if left alone. However I would again strongly advise you to seek professional advice as the surviving babies will need regular care and attention.

Over the last couple of weeks I spotted a hedgehog several times in my back garden and yard during daylight hours. It seemed to be wandering around quite happily, but I thought it was strange that it was making an appearance in broad daylight. Then at the weekend (on a day of torrential rain) I found it dead in the middle of the lawn, although there were no signs of any injury. I wondered if our unseasonal weather/climate change might have had anything to do with it.

Reply: It's certainly not a good sign that it was out in daylight. Perhaps implies that it was having trouble finding food or had some nutrition-related illness. If I had to guess I'd say that it was coincidental that it died on a particularly wet day.

Hi! Im so relieved to have found this web site, I have just been down the garden to my daughters playhouse where I put some of my horses old horse rugs. I have moved them to the side and to my shock there are 6 baby hedgehogs!! They starting to squeak so I coered them back up, I have put a bowl of water, catfood and some soaked digestive biscs outside the shed, because I didnt want to encourage any stray cats to go in.I have put a little strap by the door to see if it moves by morning. If the mom hasnt returned is or there when I look tomorrow what do I do???? Bring them all in or leave them? The babys I would guess bylooking at the pics on here is approx a week old. Really want to help them but not sure what to do for the best. Thanks Joanne

Reply: My thinking would be to leave the baby hedgehogs alone unless you notice them looking particularly thin, weak or they don't move around much. It's most likely that the mother just isn't around. If it does look like they have been abandoned (it should be obvious as they will suffer if they're not fed their mother's milk every day) then they will need to be taken in. At that point I would strongly recommend you seek professional help as they need quite a specialised diet at such a young age. Good luck!

It is NOT illegal in the UK to buy and keep some breeds of hedghogs suc has the Aferican pygmy, the Alergerian and the Long ear/Long eard Indian and I think you are delibretly ommiting that and makes me not listen even more

Reply: Oops that page does need fixing - sorry! As far as I know (not being a lawyer, policeman etc.) it's still illegal to sell European hedgehogs as pets as they are endangered. However you are right in that some species suh as the African pigmy hedgehog are legitimately sold as pets here. Notice how I'm resisting having a rant about that...

I have noticed a family of hedgehogs (Dad, Mom and Baby) in my garden. For lack of knowledge, I have been putting tinned dog-food and water out for them at night. They were with me last year too, so I guess they are happy here. My garden is fully enclosed in the back, so there is no danger of traffic. Any suggestions how I can keep them happy and safe?

Reply: Sounds like you're already doing a great job! It's fascinating to hear that they've come back for a second year as they'll have built a new nest, and I don't think that hedgehogs are territorial.

We have just found a nest in our back garden, we often see the mum going in and out but have only seen one baby, how many offspring do hedgehogs usually have?

Reply: My handy reference guide (The Natural Hedgehog) says it's anything between 1 and 8 per litter, and the female may have two litters in a summer.

i have a hedgehog that is sleeping in my cat bed, it eats the cat food and is in the shed. should we just leave him to do as he pleases.

Reply: That's unusual but not unheard of. The hedgehog probably thinks of your cat bed as its summer nest and so will probably stay around until winter sets in. I'd be particularly keen for you to leave him/her alone if you notice babies.

I wish some enterprising businessman would set up a Rent-a-Hedgie service for green gardeners, so there could be an organic way to control slugs! We once had to rescue a baby hedgehog that had got trapped at the front of our house, but I've never seen one in the back garden (where it could do me some good).

I found all information interesting. I have a hedgehog in my garden and would like to know what can I feed him for him to come back every night, I pick him up most nights and he likes it because he comes back. He doesnt curl up when I pick him up, does that mean he likes me?

Reply: It's an instinctive reaction to curl up when scared so it implies he feels safe when you pick him up. I've seen it before that they curl up when you first handle them then realise you're not hurting them. As far as food goes, either collect some insects from the garden, feed it chunks of cooked meat or put some dog/cat food out (not fish flavour though).

A few years ago I 'over-wintered' a pair of abandoned hedgehogs in my cold greenhouse. One escaped when someone left the door oopen, but the other one lived through the winter. Accidentally, the night I left the door open for 'her' (Myfanwy) to go free, it poured with rain. But 'she' came back the next night, and stayed the once, and then left for good. I never had a positive ID of Myfanwy afterwards, but I certainly have a pair of hedgehogs regularly 'grazing' the lawn at night. I do hope that they are related to my dear Myfanwy.

Glad I have checked out the websites I have so far. We have 3 babies in our garden,(first night there were 2) had no idea what to feed them. Ignorantly gave them bread and milk, now see this is wrong. Tonight they will get apple and water, see if they like it. Just hope that 2 nights of bread and milk will not do them too much harm

Reply: They should survive those 2 nights! Not sure how they'll take to the apples though as I think they'd prefer meat. Would be interesting to know though.

Hedgehogs have been living in my garden for years. We are a team in trying to eradicate the slug and snail population! They usually hibernate underneath the garden shed, but one of them chose a corner of the greenhouse this year. I discovered it while dismantling the greenhouse to put up a new one - all work halted until I get some advice!

Lovely site packed with info - sadly couldnt find any details on what I was looking for - a friend asked me how to identify hedgehog droppings as she thought she had some in her polytunnel but was not sure. I have searched numerous hedgehog web sites and can find no mention of this. Any info appreciated please.

Reply: Can't think of any websites I'm afraid but I would recommend "The Natural Hedgehog" by Lenni Sykes with Jane Durrant.
