| Thank you for the information I have gained from this web site. We have a hedgehog who calls every night around 9.30 pm, alas he has great difficulty walking as it looks as if he has injured a limb some time ago.Food is left out for him both in our garden and my neighbours. The dishes of cat food, small bits of cheese and would you believe broken biscuits are always gone by morning. | ||

| thank you for your site, i have found it quite informative. i am doing research on the hedgehogs, for two reasons. the first being, that i was quite interested, in finding out about, the size a hedgehog will grow to, and to find out if their was any harm that could come to my children. secondley i wanted to find out if i could help a hedgehog, that has came into our garden, and i think may be making a home. if i could i wanted to help it, and encourage it to stay in the garden, so it can have some protection, from the natural harms that come along. i have a raised deck of about 12" high, and in front of this is a small overgrown flowerbed. the hedgehog seems to like both of these places. i think that under the decking would make a ideal place for a home, so i wanted to find information to help me encorage this. i think that it will be some protection against other animals and wether aspects. i also wanted to know if their was any way i could help in the food area, to help with the hibernation period. i have read that either tined cat / dog food is good, so i thought that i could feed it some of this, starting in the middle of september, so it gets used to this in time for the winter coming. | ||

| I've just in the last week removed into an in-town house that has a dec- ently-sized backyard, one where-in i'm thinkin' about getting a miniature orchard planted. As long as any fence that i will get installed will be en- tirely solid at ground-level, would giv- ing a hedgehog its run of the whole yard be a humane pet owning policy? What about the (coastal) Maine winter? What about domestic or feral cats? | ||

| I've just taken some photos of the baby hedgehogs in my garden. Originally we caught the mother building the nest, when i was on my way to work. I am surprised the squeals of delight didn't frighten her away as she jumped at the time and i was no more than a foot away. | ||

| Hedgehogs may look cute - but they are not domestic animals, and belong in their own habitat. We had to keep one in our walled garden over winter. Hedgehogs here get squashed by cars. His hibernacula looked very small and flimsy, but luckily it was a mild winter. We fed him up, before hibernation, on tinned dog food (no jelly), muesli, peanut butter, sultanas, puppy biscuits and water. He was a really messy eater! At dusk he'd come straight down our path to the house - so he 'knew' where his food came from. We released him the next spring into a field where hedgehogs are known to live. It was good to know he was safely back in the wild, and not trapped in our garden. | ||

| I found your site very informative, but am very pleased that you are actively discouraging keeping hedgehogs as pets! I work as a vet nurse caring for a sick and injured hedgehogs in New Zealand. Having a LOT of experience with these animals, I firmly believe that although they are very cute and can on occasion become reasonably tame, they should under no circumstances be kept as pets. The stress on a captive hedgehog is immense and I believe keeping them unnecessarily in captivity amounts to animal cruelty. Keep up the good work! Teri | ||

| I'm looking for information on hedgehogs being mean, and agressive... I read 5,300 paged books on them before i actually got one... i've had him for 3 days now and when i try to touch him he just pulls his qillsovers his face and shuves thema t my fingers... any help from anybody i would appretiate.
thanks Reply: Hedgehogs aren't mean and aggressive animals however it sounds like it's just scared and curls up. This is the natural reaction of a hedgehog - probably instinctive - and to be expected. | ||
