The only hedgehog I have seen is the one kept as a pet by my step sister in Indianapolis,IN. I don't think that they are mistreating it in any way, but it is clearly afraid of humans. I don't think it is a great idea to keep them as pets. I did have a run in with not a hedge hog but a porcupine- a distant relative I know. This was in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. You see, I got lost for 2 days and saw a porcupine on day 2. I was very hungry and thought about making it my meal! Luckily for the animal, the park rangers found me later that day and no animals were injured during my adventure!!

I wondered if anyone can advise me.I found a hedgehog in the garden tonight and gave him some mince meat which he/she enjoyed, but shouldn't he/she be in hibernation. Can I make him a shelter to hibernate in? How? Has anyone done this?

I'm 14 and I live in the US. I have an African Pygmy hedgehog for a pet. I let it roam my room, and if I could I would let it roam the house, but there are too many places for it to get lost in. The fact that you think keeping hedgehogs as pets is cruel, is untrue. I dont do anything to him. I just let him sleep behind the computer and run around at night. And I've almost got him litter trained. He's a cute little bugger. When he dies, I'll just get another.

Hi my name is Addison Sklar and I'm in a sophmore at Monte Del Sol. i happen to be doing a report on hedgehogs for biology. My biology teacher asked us to find information on an organism of our choice and i still need information on the evolution of hedgehogs. I noticed you had a message asking for help that was posted some time ago so I thought maybe you could help me. If you could i would be very thankful.

Whilst I'm out driving, especially after dusk, I spend more time looking at the road surfaces for our prickly friends then I do for other road users. Upon locating a Spike at risk, I always stop, and if near a field or another suitable location, I let them go straight away. If not I carefully relocate Spike, on my large, hedgerow edged back garden. I have been known to turn up at home with several Spikes at the same time! Prior to releasing them, I always look at them first though and if they are heavily invested with those big white lice and ticks, or their ears, area of the mouth or eyes are covered in them, I take them home, and with a vet preperation lice remover, I patiently sit there, dab the lice and ticks (using a cotton wool bud dipped in the lice killer, never spray them) and I wait for the lice to die. I then remove them, with tweezers, clean the wound, again with a vet preperation antibiotic wound cleaner. I then put some cat food and water in seperate bowls, place our Spikey friend, the food and water on my back garden, go indoors, open the patio curtains and sit and watch Spike get on with his/her life. I encourage slugs etc by not using any form of control other than the many Spikes (I call them all Spike by the way) that now live in the many hedgerows (yes we still have them) in the area I live. To encourage them to stay within the area, I supply leaves and grass cuttings that I push under the hedgerows in my own garden. I also have a compost heap. Each summer I place a network of thickish branches in a dome effect, prior to building their winter home throughout the summer using straw, grass cutting and other garden waste. This 'dome' helps them get to the centre and the rotting material supplies them with all the natural food they need. It also encourages nesting too! I always have several winter guests sleeping the winter away in my garden! NOTE: Whilst the Spike is in my care or home I keep the brightness of the lighting and handling to a minimum to stop them from becoming too stressed. All the years that I have been doing this, I have never been bitten by a Spike nor have I ever been bitten by one of their un-welcome parasitic guests. During the breeding season - I never relocate a Spike outside of the area I originally found it.

As you can see from my address I adore Hedgehogs (taken from Beatrix Potter Book - Mrs. Tiggywinkle). I remember seeing them in England quite often, but unfortunately now with all the building and road construction they too often become a victim of fast traffic or other hazards. I believe there is a Hedgehog Hospital in England somewhere down south - I have a brochure from it. I would like to hear from other Hedgehog/English countryside fans.

Every evening at 1200 AM my dog and I take a short walk outside to allow her to relieve herself. She always knows when the local hedgehog is around and lets me know it is time to go see her. We go every evening and it is always the same ritual with the dog whining to play with the hedgehog. This little guy has lived around our home for 3 years now and I have become interested in its well being. I have not fed it or otherwise ever handled it, and I am certain that nobody else does either. I am currently living in the Stuttgart area of Germany and we seem to have had a lot of hedgehogs here over the years. One thing disturbs me, all your talk about farming and city living. the hedgehogs grow up here, (man has settled and lived in this area since the Roman Empire), and the hedgehogs seem to be living on like always. I bet if you did the exact same study on humans you would find humans living in the country live longer as well? The same difference between wild dogs and man's best friend. It seems to me the case you make falls short of convincing anyone that hedgehogs would make decent pets.. on the contrary, it sells it pretty good. Recheck the way you deliver your site so that it convinces the target audience of your good intentions, and your desire to keep all hedgehogs wild. One look at the survey will tell you what you wanted to know. It appears to be a poke at the US with Germany falling into their traditional role pacifistic green peacers. Unfortunately the americans are the ones reading your site.... nearly twice the survey results. One thing we all seem to have in common is a love of the little animals, we seem to disagree on the nature that love should take. Informative site, I learned a lot.

i have just seen my first ever hedgehog and i must say that they are one of the most adoroble animals that i have ever had the pleasure to meet, i am currently working in the middle east and i was wondering what this animal likes to eat and they are native to this part of the world, also i was wondering does it have any relitives in this part of the world, this morning i saw an animal that looked remarkably like an australian bilby, and yes i toltally agree with your views on cruelty and the keeping of this animal as a pet, thanks for your time and for a fantastic web site, regards shane daniel.

I am writing from the USA and I like this site because it was quite informative. It would have been nice to see some information about different illnesses that hedgehogs are succeptible to in addition to the hazards that they encounter. I have 2 pet african pigmy hedgehogs as you can see if you visit my homepage URL that I posted. These animals are really amazing and fun. It's good to see that there is more attention being given to hedgies because as a pet owner I want to learn as much as possible about them to make life enjoyable for them.

I have been surfing the web for more than a week now, getting as much knowledge as possible about hedgies. I agree that wild hedgies should not be made into pets, but so many people breed hedgies, and I believe that these animals have adapted through many generations to become perfect pets. Thus, when they have been bred as pets, I think that its fine to keep hedgies as pets. If anyone out there knows of a breeder in South Africa, please let me know!

Just to say I was shocked to hear story on Radio 4 this morning that they want to cull the entire population of Hedgehogs in the Outer Hebridies. Meantime, for any of your hedgehog lovers, I run a lovely B&B near the coast at Lyme Regis, Dorset, called HEDGEHOG CORNER B&B. It is stuffed with hedgehog curios, so anyone who would like come and visit, call me on 01297 32036 or check out my site on www.smoothhound.co.uk/hotels/hedgehog.html. If I can go on one of your links with my www.smoothhound.co.uk/hotels/hedgehog.html I would like that very much? Yours, Joy Raymond

We are very interested in hedgehogs. A few years ago we saved a couple that were in the middle of a busy road and released them in our largish garden which we have planted to attract as much wildlife as possible as we are interested in all types of insects animals etc. Last year we had a pair of hedgehogs breed and a mother came with 3 babies as well as the male. We put out catfood for them each night as we like to watch them feed although they are totally wild. We have made sure they have not become used to humans as this would be dangerous for them. One of them lives under a large ivy and we have a couple of hedgehog boxes under shrubs in the garden. We find your website very interesting. Nice to hear of others who are interested in these creatures.

Have a hedgehog rescued from a bunch of druggie idiots in Canada- that part of his life is over now- onto the new life here in my cartoon studio.. this HH business is all new to me, HH are veryt rare beings here in New World at this point- kid visitors call him the scrub brush mouse-- I had never seen a live HH before, he came without any instructions. My library has no hedgehog books or information - neither did pet shoppes Thanks for your reasonable workable insight you so freely share- God Bless the Obsessed - speeds up my learning curve.. I believe mystery HH is a male no idea how old-or variety he scratches a lot wonder if he has fleas- I am getting mystery bites since he moved in a week ago- - skin is clean eyes brightened after a few days proper food water cleanliness here in his rusty wire cage I sterilized and reconditioned -stuck finger in and he gently bit me- I know nothing about HH= except he will freeze to death if he escapes outside and doesn't come inside before October-- UK raised friends who know about HH made a small basket house for him, he was _so pleased with it after laying in filthy ripped up paper all his life -- I was surprised when I saw him smile at my old cat--I thought I was seeing things but today i learned HH actually do smile- idiot owners threw cat food in cage- inadequately watered him provided no cave or toys ignored him on hot porch, it rained on him as he stared at a wall -- HH lived like they did, without any purpose fun or style - Anyhow he loved first taste of peanut butter, tofu and halva, bits of hard boiled eggs, cold rice and variety of veggies and wild berries -- he went right for cheese but I wonder about dairy---- I am a big fan of this happy little being now, he will experience joy of living here this I assure you - it worked out splendidly-

While not a "pet" in the usual sense, he isan interesting little creature and seems quite content in my household. I plan to create a larger nad more interesting habitat for him.
