Keeping Hedgehogs as pets - ie caged and unable to roam free is cruel - unless it cannot fend for itself in the wild - ie blind or damaged in some way. I have 4 pet hedghogs - or at least that's how many turned up for feeding this evening in the garden

I just rescued a full grown albino male hedgehog. He's the sweetest little guy, but he does need a little extra care right now, that's why I dropped in today.

yesterday I was sitting on my bench in my garden and I spotted two Hedgehogs, at first I thought they were mother and baby but then I realized they were male and female because the male had started circling the female and snorting more and more loudly. I wachted them for an hour, then suddenly I saw anouter male hedgehog running up the path, the male that was with the female ran over to the other male and pushed him, then he went to find the female. Later I saw the male and female again and the male was doing the same as he had done before.

Hello I am new to TN and have hedgehogs. I have African Pygmy Albino hedgehogs. I have both a male and a female, a female from the first litter and three from the second litter. I am interested in breeding and selling them. I have hand tamed the and they are about three months old. I have two males and a female for sale. I want to set up a website and or a home page for myself.

You forgot to mention that hedgehogs as pets are African Pygmies, not European. Also, they are not afraid of people if they are properly socialized. Any animal that lives outside and has never had contat with people will be afraid of them. Hedgehogs make excellant pets if properly cared for. They are very affectionate and playful. Just because they sometimes roam for miles doesn't mean that they need to. They are looking for food, not excercise. A wheel provides plenty of excersise, and as long as you play with them they remain stimulated.

Re; the 2 animals which are not hibernating.....research shows that if they were to be given their freedom then their natural instincts will quickly become established and although they will lost weight for 10 days or so, after that sort of time they will start to find food and fend for theirselves quite happily. In fact they would be MUCH better off in the wild for these animals are normally solitary and will bite and fight if kept together. Usually when kept together one will bully the other and then the lower order animal ends up being kept away from the food and may starve. On the question of food...quite apart from giving tinned food, don't forget that hedgies are very very fond of Avacado's and Chocolate Biscuits. It's also a good plan to add vitamins to their water. In England you can buy an orange coloured liquid from chemists called Abidec. Add one drop of this to their drinking water every third or fourth day. This will give the necessary vitamin addition. It really is best for any captive hoggy to be given it's freedom as they make very unhappy pets and routinely walk anything up to 2 miles each night, Try to choose a night when there is rain likely in the coming 48 hours. We generally choose a Sunday night avoiding impending bank holidays so as to minimise the possibility of the animals being found and harmed or taken back into captivity again. For more information see your local library as there are now many good books available which will give you lots of very useful and worthwhile information.

Have two non-hibernating hedgehogs (1 male 1 female) in our purpose built hog house, polishing off the same amount of food as our fully grown west highland terrier. do they ever become so used to us that they will expect food forever from a tin?

Your pictures and facts are a nice "must" for a web site. I also have to give you credit for your "did you know" facts and giving its name in different languages! Dear Jennifer; Re; your question, the correct name for a Hedgehog baby....about 7 years ago the Hedgehog Society conducted a national poll, asking everyone who was interested to send in the name they liked best. The name which appeared the most and which was eventually adopted and is now universally accepted by everyone is 'Hoglet'.

thanks for such an infomative site. Although my two hedgies is of the african type, I am in Namibia , and it differs from yours, the info is still mush appreciated. Here in Namibia it is a protected specie and I might get a heavty fine if discovered....why I have them, well I rescue them from blackmen ,on their way to the market in Oshakati, where they would have been eaten. These two (Varkie- male and Niky-female) roam in my garden freely, size about 18 m x 24 m , so plenty of space and free to an extend.

Dear Dr. Almagor.... Re; your comments on your hedgehog from last October. We here at Stumpies, had a female animal which had lost both her front paws but which lived very happily with us for quite a few years. We were keen for her to hibernate because this took the wear and tear off her legs and paws whilst she was asleep. Problems with these cases come from unexpected directions. For example, we had to take her to our Vets' quite frequently to have her teeth cleaned and ocasionally removed because she was on a constant diet of artificial food which encouraged decay. You can tell if decay is setting in because the animal will start to 'lick its chops' a lot, salivate more readily and eventually if you smell the mouth, the smell is quite marked and unmistakeable when the caries is advanced. Certainly, we had no problems with the stumps becoming inflamed or lacerated. By the way.....other problems arise if the animal has lost a rear paw or leg. In these cases it is impossible for the animal to scratch and there can be troubles with the skin. Try and keep her as clean as possible by constantly changing the surface she has to walk upon. If she is constantly in a cage which has droppings left in the bottom, the animal can walk in them and transfer bacteria onto the skin when it scratches. Normally in the wild, droppings are left behind and the paws cleaned by walking on grass surfaces before the next urge to scratch sets in.

Please let us have more information about hedgehogs in Namibia. We have picked up two in Owamboland (where they get normally eaten by the residents), and have them running abound in our garden.
